Stephenson’s fourth solo novel, set primarily in far-future Shanghai at time when nations have been superseded by enclaves common cultures (”claves”), abundantly justifies hype that surrounded Snow Crash, his first foray into science fiction. Here, author avoids major structural problem that book-a long lump philosophical digression-by melding myriad perspectives cogitations into his tale, which simultaneously SF, fantasy and masterful political thriller. Treating nanotechnology he did virtual reality Snow Crash-as jumping-off point-Stephenson presents several engaging characters. John Percival Hackworth an engineer living in neo-Victorian clave, who commissioned by one of world’s most powerful men create Primer that might enable man’s granddaughter be educated ways superior to “straight narrow.” When Hackworth mugged, an illegal copy of Primer falls into hands a working-class girl named Nell, and most deadly game’s afoot. Stephenson weaves several plot threads at once, as paths Nell, Hackworth other significant characters-notably Nell’s brother Harv, Hackworth’s daughter Fiona an actress named Miranda-converge diverge across continents complications, most brought about by Hackworth’s actions Nell’s development. Building steadily to wholly earned intriguing climax, this long novel, which presents its sometimes difficult technical concepts accessible ways, should appeal readers other than habitual SF users.
